Student A: This is the pencil case I just bought. What do you think?
Student B: It’s really nice! I’ve never seen such a big pencil case.
Student A: Yeah.
Student B: What’s inside?
Student A: Take a look. In my pencil case, there are three ballpoint pens, two pencils, a pencil sharpener, an eraser, a ruler, a roll of tape, and a small stapler.
Student B: That’s a lot of stuff! I didn’t even bring a pen. Can you lend me one?
Student A: No problem. Here you go.
Student B: Thank you.
Student A: You’re welcome.

Notes
这么、那么

The pair 这么 (zhème) and 那么 (nàme) are used in a similar way to the English words “that” and “so” to emphasize the degree or extent of an adjective.”这么” is used to indicate “this much” or “so,” while “那么” is used to indicate “that much” or “so” for things that are slightly further away.

Subj. + 那么 / 这么 + adj.

Examples:

  • 我这么晚才回家,家人都睡了。
(wǒ zhème wǎn cái huí jiā, jiārén dōu shuìle.)
I returned home so late that my family is already asleep.
  • 那么便宜的东西,你怎么不买?
(nàme piányi de dōngxi, nǐ zěnme bù mǎi?)
That’s so cheap, why won’t you buy it?
  • 你为什么带了那么多书?
(nǐ wèishénme dài le nàmeduō shū?)
Why did you bring so many books?
连 (lián) ….. 也 (yě) …..

“连⋯⋯也⋯⋯” (lián…yě…)or “连⋯⋯都⋯⋯” (lián… dōu…) is typically used to express surprise or add emphasis in a similar way as the word “even” in English. It is a set phrase so both parts must be used.

连 + subj. + 都 /也+( 不 / 没) + verb

Examples:

  • 小孩子懂这个问题。
(lián xiǎo háizi yě dǒng zhège wèntí.)
Even young children understand this question.
  • 她叫什么名字不知道。
(wǒ lián tā jiào shénme míngzi dōu bùzhīdào.)
I don’t even know what her name is.
