Notes
(1)Expressing time

In Chinese, time phrases can be placed before or after the subject, though placing the subject first is more common.

For example:

早上六点早饭。(I eat breakfast at six in the morning.)

Subject + time phrase + verb + object

(2)Adverbs of Frequency

When expressing frequency in Chinese, the adverb is also placed between the subject and the verb.

每天早饭。(I eat breakfast everyday.)

Subject + adverb of frequency + verb + object

(3) The basic function of 都

都 is used to indicate that something is true for an entire noun phrase. When 都 follows a plural subject, it indicates that the verb phrase is true for the entire subject. In this use it is translated as “all” or “always”.

To emphasize that something always happens every morning you can use “都”.

我每天吃早饭。(I eat breakfast everyday).

If you would like to learn about the other ways “都” can be use see, “How to use 都“.

(4) Combining time and frequency

Now if we wanted to say, “I eat breakfast at 6 o’clock every morning.” We could combine our first two examples.

我早上六点吃早饭。+ 我每天吃早饭。= 我每天早上六点吃早饭。

Note that when we specify a particular time we don’t use “都”, since we are no longer emphasizing that something always happens.

Language in Action
