Greetings! I am Emily Atherley, the creator of Exploring Chinese – a website that aims to make learning Chinese feel like an exciting adventure.
I have 6.5 years of studying and teaching in China under my belt, and a degree in Chinese Language from Dalian University of Technology. I am passionate about sharing my knowledge and expertise with anyone interested in learning this fascinating language.
Since my first Chinese class, I’ve been captivated by the language and determined to explore its depths. I truly believe that anyone can learn Chinese, as long as they have a genuine interest and the right guidance.
My enjoyable language journey
Despite my Chinese heritage, I began as a complete beginner. So, I understand the challenges learners face and the joy that comes with overcoming them. Through systematically learning Chinese as part of my degree, I gained the foundation necessary to explore my other interests using the language. And, this exploration which is where I made most of my progress. From the outset, my goal was to read any book written in modern Chinese. I am not ashamed to say that I started with children’s books. My favorite series are 《装在口袋里的爸爸》、《校园三剑客》、《幻想大王奇遇记》. In fact, I found them so interesting that I finished all of the books in those series and more. Building on this, I easily progressed to reading adult fiction and non-fiction.
I also watched TV shows and movies, listened to podcasts, played games, and watched YouTube videos, all in Chinese. No, I did not spend all my time indoors. I travelled, learnt to play Ping-Pong and basketball and joined a Kung Fu class. Plus, I’m quite talkative, so I enjoyed countless conversations with Chinese natives from all walks of life. I used Chinese for all these hobbies, so they were not distractions. They are what helped me graduate as valedictorian with a 3.9 GPA from a top university. My writing improved so much, that I even wrote an award-winning 36,000-word thesis in Chinese. Combining a structured approach with exploration and fun truly is the best way to accelerate language learning.
What I’m up to now
Although I now live outside of China, I still use Chinese every day to learn more about my varied interests. These include behavioral economics, project management, cooking, fitness, psychology, personality typology, and programming. At this point, I can use the language to do pretty much anything I want, whether it’s watching gaming live-streams or delving into complex topics.
It’s your turn
My mission is to inspire a passion for Chinese in you, regardless of your reason for learning the language. I hope to help you surpass your goals while thoroughly enjoying the process. So, if you’re ready to embark on this exciting journey of Chinese language learning, I’ve got a wealth of knowledge to share with you!
